One of the biggest surprises that I've had this year is my own realization of how important it is for singers to learn how to act. I don't mean reading a cue card act. Or, announcing another performer act. I mean being able to convey a world of emotion in 2.5 minutes act. Everyone always assumes that will come when they get on stage. Guess what....It doesn't. I KNOW THIS...I've been acting as long as I've been walking and talking (almost). But even I have let singers who can't act slide so much when I'm working with them. NO MORE! If you want to act you don't have to sing. But, if you want to sing, you better know how to act. If you want to work in business and ever speak in front of more than 2 people.,you have to learn to act. If you want to sell concepts or products of any kind to anyone, you better learn how to act.If you ever get a speeding ticket and you know you weren't speeding you better be able to stand up and defend yourself, you need acting skills for that. When you want to manipulate your boyfriend to do whatever you want...No I'm just kidding. Nobody would do anything like that!
There is just no getting around it. As a life coach, many people do come to me saying they have such a fear of public speaking that it isn't worth it. But that is the most common fear in the world and there are 100 percent effective ways of getting rid of stage fright or fear of public speaking. So please don't let stage fright hold you back.
But as usual, I am getting off the topic. I was talking about singers. I want everyone to go on to you tube and find a cover song where someone is singing it with no passion whatsoever. I have seen hundreds but I wouldn't dare put it on here. I want to build people up not bring attention to their short comings. So, please do this. Then look at these videos below this post.
Many of you know that I've known Kayla Nettles and have been working with her since she was a little girl in Florida. I was her first vocal instructor...(Although she has had many since me) And I have worked with her on her acting...And she has always taken direction really well...SO, I'm not putting this video here to brag about how great an acting coach I am. (I mean I am but that isn't why I'm putting this here hahaha) So, yes, if you are a singer and you want to make your songs more authentic... ( If you want to improve your acting skills) I can definitely help you. But, so can lots of other people.
Anyway,Kayla took this cover and made it seem so much more sinister and creepy just by her facial expressions and attitude. (Acting skills and technique) The video is by Madd Talent Music
Then watch Rachel Crowe (Who I don't know at all) when she sings live. No second takes. At 11 years old you believe every word of what she is saying in that song. I've discussed this with people and they've said "True but she is way too young to sing a song like that" I disagree...when you watch that, imagine that she is singing that song to a man who her single mother has been dating and he's been horrible to them.Get that picture in your head and then watch the video... Does it seem inappropriate? Or does it seem like a girl who is at her wits end and is angry, bitter and sad? Before and immediately after the song she is a giggly 11 year old. Very sweet and adorable.
I haven't seen that kind of dramatic singing performance by someone that age since I was a kid myself watching it on Broadway. Then trying to duplicate the performances at home in my room and I'm sure failing miserably. It's probably a good thing that we didn't have video camera's capturing every note and gesture young aspiring performers make. AND...I switched topics again.
